After surgery

  • Bite on a swab while exercising pressure for 40 minutes.
  • Put ice on your face during the next 18 hours. In order to protect your skin weave some cloth around the ice. Watch out that the skin of your cheek where you have been operated does not get too cold.
  • Do not floss your mouth vigorously during the first 48 hours. If you do you might prevent the formation of a blood clot [blood clots are the clumps that occur when the blood hardens from a liquid to a solid (coagulates)] and thus interrupt the normal healing process.
  • It is preferable to maintain a posture in which the head lays higher than the body. For example seated or lying down with the head resting on a pillow.
  • The day after the operation floss your teeth with temperate water, or with water mixed with mouthwash.
  • Try to brush your teeth properly and use toothbrush where possible. Brush teeth after every meal. Use surgical toothbrush (which is softer) in areas where surgery was performed.
  • Preferably eat meals which are soft or smooth in consistency and temperate. Drink a lot of fluids. Do not chew in the area of the intervention for several days and do not consume irritating foods.
  • During the first 24 hours the wound may bleed a little bit. If the wound bleeds abnormally bite on a swab in the affected area and hold pressure for 30 minutes. Keep repeating until the bleeding stops.
  • The following may occur during the post operative stage (until day seven or ten): your cheek swells, you get a bruise (skin discoloration), you feel pain, you have difficulties opening your mouth, and you possibly have decimal degrees of fever (until 38 C is normal). Do not strain your body nor your mind for three days.
  • We recommend you to not smoke until the wounds have healed. Do not drink alcohol nor carbonated drinks.
  • Take the medicine your doctor has prescribed you.
  • Preferablably avoid direct exposure to sunlight for three days
  • Sleep on opposite cheek where operation has been performed
  • Avoid activities that make you sweat unneccesarily because this interrupts the healing process.
  • Do not swim in a pool or the ocean for three days.
